How to develop intuition – a practical guide for you and your kids

Intuition is a strong desire to act or not act in a certain way that comes to you inexplicably.

It’s usually right, just as your first impression about an idea or someone you meet.

You can train your intuition to be more accurate and it’ll make you a lot happier. Trusting your intuition is a powerful Pagan practice and we can find examples of it all over our culture.

Intuition is a cognitive process that happens on the background of all your mental activity, the result of constant complex computations of everything around us. There is research on it, but it’s obvious that science is just playing catch-up here. It’s real.

Some people are naturally more intuitive than others (Myers-Briggs classification describes intuitive types) and obviously this will make sense for kids are are already more grown up.

Below are a few working & practical tips for development of intuition, use them as starting points and ideas for tuning yourself.

Start in your domain

Each of us is especially good at something specific – that’s the domain you have to start your intuition exercises in. Whether it’s sports, woodworking, gardening, there is an activity where you feel how things will turn out better than others.

Great masters in all human endeavours have one thing in common – and it’s their creative intuition. The ability to pick something that will work well without overthinking or explaining.

This intuition can be extrapolated to other areas with time once you start noticing it, acting upon it, and rewarding it for being right.

Move fast and get experience

Intuition is a manifestation of expertise. Your expertise comes from practical experience – that is why your intuition is the strongest about things you’re expert at.

To become more of an expert in other things, make sure you get experience fast. Make mistakes fast, make calculated attempts, re-evaluate your assumptions and gather data.

Even if you don’t make detailed sophisticated reports, your intuition is processing data 24/7 to later hit you with an unexpected suggestion.

I’ve been telling my youngest son that “mistakes are his friends” while he was preparing to start school. Without mistakes you can’t improve – but teach your kids that mistakes need to be fast & safe.

Reward yourself for being right

Note each time you listen to your gut and it turns out to be right. Give yourself praise, buy a treat or a gift for yourself.

It’s that simple, train yourself to listen to yourself like a dog.

This is the most effective trick for training your intuition. Each time you went with it and it was right, acknowledge it, say it aloud, and it will grow your confidence.

Stay clean

Your intuition has a quiet voice.

You need to be able to hear it, so don’t burn out your willpower all the time. Don’t overeat, undersleep, don’t be blasting music in your headphones 24/7, be outdoors more, minimize noise, don’t talk to people mindlessly all the time.

The same goes for your kids – portion screen time, let them have time in Nature, have them read, free-write and draw.

Consume quality content

This goes hand in hand with staying clean. Don’t expect to listen to hip-hop, watch reality shows, dumb streams, or porn, – and to be able to sharpen your intuition.

Read Nordic sagas, read Greek myths, fairy-tales, watch good movies.

Do things your own way

Speak your own way and use original phrasing without trendy jargon. Short slang words reduce the amount and depth of thinking you’re doing.

Don’t force it

Intuition is not about guessing a card or a word on the other page of a book. That’s more in the domain of divination or gambling. So don’t go around trying to forcibly guess what happens next in the world around you.

Rather, developing your intuition is about learning to listen. It gets triggered by itself, and the more you train it, the more often it sends you signals.

I’ve focused this article on you as a parent, but you can obviously apply all of to your kids. However, you can best help others only once you help yourself first.

Develop your own intuition and it will help you become a better parent, as well as a better human going through this world full of Gods and their manifestations.
