Starship Troopers (1997) movie review

Starship Troopers is one of those movies that has been created to ridicule something but everyone takes it at face value. It failed as sarcasm, but has been excellent as promotion.

The director Paul Verhoeven filmed ST to show a militaristic fascist society and demonstrate how bad, cruel, and irrational it is. However, the movie feels like an ode to one.

Back in the 90s when the movie just came out we teenagers watched it on rented VHS tapes as a regular sci-fi action, without putting any extra thought to the director’s design, just because the world is so organic and natural.

Not any single one of us thought “dehumanizing the bugs is bad”.

I noticed that my kids watch it the same way, they just love the action.

And we just hate the bugs.

In many ways, the movie is an epic Homeric saga, albeit with a more collectivist twist for a larger society.

The movie has perfect quotes, epic battles, and it fires you up.

We just hate the bugs.

Pagan Father score: 9/10
